Deal of the Week: 07/02/2012

If you downloaded Crimson Alliance for free earlier this year but didn't bother with the add-on packs which were priced at 800MSP each then this weeks Deal of the Week may be your cup of tea if you are a Gold Member.

The freemium title has three DLC's on offer:

Or if you would like to download all three without paying nearly 1700MSP then you can purchase the 'All Class Pack' which gives players all three Class Packs, for a steeply cheaper price.

Third Elite Content Drop Coming February 21st

Modern Warfare 3's Content Drop Season continues later this month if you have already got bored of the two other recently released content drops. One more map will be joining Liberation and Piazza on 21st February, just two weeks away.

Of course, it is for 'Elite Premium Members' only, who payed the 4200MSP for 1 year of membership however if you want to join in on the fun then you can always purchase membership. Also, for those PS3 members the other two maps will be coming exclusively to Premium Members on the 28th of February.

The official Elite website gives a view of the new map, Overwatch:

Shots break out on a construction site atop a New York City skyscraper. Battle takes place along two levels in a near symmetrical layout, with the central bridge and side routes open to attack from multiple angles. Watch your every step, as a lack of boundaries surrounding the perimeter leaves nothing to prevent you from falling far to the ground below.

If that isn't enough for you there is also a screenshot below.

Gamerscore League Leaderboard 3rd Feb 2012

10,000G is all that is between our top 2 teams, and that gap is closing with each passing week. Our top ten are nearly all over the 30,000G mark now, and we see that another team is ready to pass the once leaders. We also see a massive jump from one of the teams, who combined hit nearly 5000G in one week. Could this team hastily become strong competition for our current leaders? The bottom of the leaderboard is growing tighter, and we will next week be left with less than 20 teams in the running.

Another week flies by and we say goodbye to two more teams. This changes the personal leaderboard slightly. Firstly, we have at the bottom of the leaderboard, two people with the exact same increase, while further up in the top ten, we see a strong push from some contestants who have stayed somewhat quiet. Our top five has changed and it looks like last weeks top scorer, Wraithrock, is intending to give our top 2 scorers a run for their money.

The Black Eyed Peas: Experience Review
After the hugely successful if albeit buggy Michael Jackson: The Experience, Ubisoft decided to take the experience part of both the name and game and add them to other artists or groups alike. Looking towards pop, rap, urban whatever they are nowadays group Black Eyed Peas to head up the next in The Experience line up of games.

With a new developer on board though, have the problems from the first game been rectified at all? Or does the game still have huge problems keeping track of dance movements or making easy dance manoeuvres incredibly hard to pull off due to poor tracking? Will you be looking for some love from this game or just looking to put it in the bin? Let's take a look and find out!

Gameplay
For a dance game, The Black Eyed Peas: The Experience is pretty packed to the rafters full of content, let me start by telling you what modes you can play around with upon starting the game and delving into what toys are at your disposal.

When you first get greeted into the game you will be able to select from the following options:

Party Play: In this mode you will be able to just jump right into any of the routines included in the game without the need to sit through the song multiple times learning the moves. As the title says it is perfect for parties as you can play by yourself or against your friends in a dance off.

Deluxe Mode: This is the games meat and bones if it were, here you will learn the full choreography of the multiple songs featured in the game, if that isn't enough for you, the choreography that you learn is comprised of real moves that the group perform to.

Not only this, but Deluxe mode lets you unlock additional items, from clothing for your characters to extra arenas or arena upgrades. The better you perform the more followers you will get on your quest to be just like your heroes if it were.

On the other end of the spectrum though you get areas such as My Dancer, here you can adjust your dancer to how you see fit and change multiple different items on them. The amount of customisable items is fairly large and only gets bigger as you unlock more.

Lastly you can also make your own choreography from selecting from all the different moves in the game and piecing them together to create your own dance. You also have the ability to download your friends pre made routines and challenge them at their own dance to see who can come out on top.

Onto the nitty gritty now, and some Kinect games have had issues when navigating menus, as sometimes the game can scroll too fast or too slow due to movements in the players body. On games like Just Dance this was rectified by letting the player use the controller to navigate freely if they so wished, unfortunately this is not the case in this game. You can use the controller if you so wish, but it is only locked off to certain areas of the game, such as making your own dance routines.

To navigate the menus fully you will have to get prepared for some awkward movements and swinging your arm around to go forwards and backwards at times. This is slightly helped by the fact that when you are dancing away, for the first time that I have seen in a dancing game. The game comes with fully fleshed out and moving flashcards. These help the player work out what move is coming up and how you can perfect it before it is your turn to try it out.

This was a great little feature that I personally enjoyed, far too many games use static flashcards that make no sense compared to the movements they are trying to depict, so to have the movements shown to you is a great improvement to the dance genre.

Lastly, some of the moves that you will be asked to pull off in game can be justified simply as being tricky and will take a while to nail down the moves to perfection. This is only hindered by the games poor tracking at times which can make hard moves almost impossible when the game makes out that your movements are not correct when they are.

The tracking does work on the game though and only a few times during a song may it say you disappeared or didn't follow the routine properly.

Graphics
When you first load up the game you will notice the great care for attention that was placed within the welcome screen and subsequent menu's. The menu system is pretty much a big dance floor that changes colour as you switch between all of the different areas of the game.

With how good the menus look, it really helps set the mood for what you will be inevitably getting yourself into, it all fits into place rather nicely to boot. You wouldn't expect to see a multi coloured flashing dance floor if you had just brought the latest shooter to greet you on the menu screen.

Overall though menu system aside the way the game has been laid out is really good even if navigating the menus can be a little awkward at times.

In game the shine to detail shows through in the different areas that you will be dancing your way through also, whilst the arenas are all works of imagination, they all try to happily reflect different periods of time within the Black Eyed Peas lifespan. Subsequently though as the stages change, so do the attires of the characters or even the Peas to help reflect where you are in the timeline.

Whilst some character models can look nicely remade, some on the other hand can look really stiff and frigid, Fergie's character springs to mind when talking about being stiff. The rest of the dancing as a whole is all well implemented and by using true choreography that the group use, you can feel like you are watching the group live instead of dancing next to them.

All in all, whilst the game is presented nicely, some of the other graphical areas can all appear to be nicely presented whilst others just don't seem to get the job done correctly.

Sound
Music games are normally hard to sum up when giving a rating to this certain area of the game. Due to the game being about music, singing and dancing you have to ask yourself, What is there to talk about? The answer is quite simple, and by simple I mean short.

Whilst playing this game you will no doubt come across many famous and well known songs from the groups long history. Most if not all of the bands most memorable hits have been included and to top it all off, hits from the groups previous years before mega stardom have also been included in the offering.

Now depending on how well you know the group will obviously depend on how many songs you already know and or like. The Black Eyes Peas have gone through many musical styles in recent years since attaining Fergie to the group, so finding something you like shouldn't be too hard to achieve. The only downfall though to this is, not all of the songs listed in the game will be ones you will enjoy or want to dance to.

If playing through a whole bunch of songs by the Peas isn't enough for you though, the group even lend some vocal talent into the mix as they will shout out random things whilst you dance away. These can range from being greeted to the dance floor by sayings like "C'mon let's do it" to challenges being issued by one of the groups members.

All in all the sound package of the game is just what it is intended to be, you won't find any songs here by groups or artists who influenced the band like in Guitar Hero or other music based games, and if you don't like the Black Eyed Peas from the start then this game probably won't be for you.

Achievements
It appears more so now then ever with Kinect games, that the games themselves really do help define what the word achievement means when it comes to gaming as it were. Obviously with the motion tracking, that helps add a whole new element to how well the game can judge you and award you in turn.

The achievements in this game help keep that in mind as the list itself is a real mixed bag of good and easy, and long and tedious. You have many achievements tied to progressing steadily through the game and earning fans and different ranks, from here on you can also work towards earning new locations that you can dance to or new customization options for your in game avatar.

All of these different actions have achievements tied to them and like I say border on being easy for example. Playing a song in a specific arena to tiresome for getting to ten million followers. Just unlocking arenas will take a few hours of playing time, let alone earning all of the additional thousands worth of fans to go on top.

Achievements are awarded for doing things a little away from the norm though, like for taking a look at the choreography area nabs you an achievement, and for making a set number of routines will get you another.

Earning the maximum rank for each and every song on the game though makes a return, and unless you're really good at the game you may struggle to attain these, sometimes the tracking can make it hard for the game to properly score you meaning the scores you need to achieve an S rank will normally land you with an A instead.

At the end of the day though this isn't a bad achievement list in the slightest. It is something to work towards over time and will go down a storm in a party atmosphere as you take on friends and colleagues, just don't expect the points to come at you thick and fast as you may be disappointed.

Summary
Black Eyed Peas: The Experience is a much better game then the Michael Jackson game that came before it, fine tuning and bug fixing has helped achieve this and it shows through no end. Obviously having a whole game devoted to just one band can be a little hit and miss when it comes to selling to the masses. But Uibsoft have managed to create yet another good dance game to go with the likes of Just Dance.

Saying that though, personally the game reminded me way too much of Dance Central in the way it expects you to play and actually try to learn the routines as opposed to the Just Dance way of playing. If an option had been included that you could just dance in experience mode, without the need to play each song four times. Then this could have been a better and more fun experience in my eyes.

If you are a Black Eyed Peas fan though and enjoy the club type tunes that the group put together nowadays, and are really interested in learning how to dance just like them. Then my friends this is the perfect game for you and will have you catered to the full experience!

Quarrel Review

Publisher: UTV Ignition Entertainment
Developer: Denki
Genre: Puzzle
Players: One - Three
Price: 400MSP
Launch Date: 25th January 2012

Quarrel is a new arcade title which has released at the cheap price of 400MSP. It's a word game where players must compete to have the highest scoring word to get one step closer to winning. But does Quarrel make a good first stand in the XBLA marketplace, or does the price tag forewarn of its quality? Find out by reading our review.

Game-Play - 8

Quarrel is a twist on the classic game of Scrabble. In Quarrel, players have to make the highest scoring word they can, beating their opponent and claiming land. To win the round, the player must own the entire island, knocking out the opponents in the process.

Starting with the basics, you can only make words based on the amount of small characters you have on a piece of land. If you have 5 then the longest word you can make will be 5 letters long. This is initially annoying, especially if you can see the 8 letter anagram. However after some time, this aspect of the game grows on you, as it adds an extra challenge to the mix.

Each round starts with a set amount of characters per piece of land. When you challenge the A.I or another player, if you win, all but 1 character will move onto the next square. Fail however and they all die apart from 1. If you challenge someone and you have fewer characters than them, if you win you capture the difference as prisoners. For example if you had 4 and challenged someone with 6, you would gain 2 prisoners. These prisoners basically join your characters and give you more letters to play with.

Despite this game having a simple premise, there are multiple modes to play in. There are quick matches for short quick fun, Domination, which puts you against the A.I in a Quarrel battle to control each island, Challenge, where you have to hit certain targets, such as gaining at least 5 pieces in one turn.

In Domination, the player is tasked with going to different islands to play Quarrel and win control of the island. There are 12 different islands, each with increasing difficulty, which is measured in the A.I's IQ. The amount of A.I players is different per map, ranging from 1-3 opponents.

Another mode in the game is Showdown. This is like a championship, where the player can challenge the top 10 A.I's in order to move up the ladder. These are head to head battles and can prove tough as the A.I ranking gets higher.

Praying comes in handy if you have a low I.Q

Quarrel also features online multiplayer, which plays out the same way as single player, just against other people. Sadly it can be hard to find people playing this title and that led to being unable to test out how well it works online.

All in all, Quarrel features simple and effective game play, that simplistic feel to the game and its rules and challenges make this XBLA title work really well. It's very easy to just jump into a game and know what you need to do. It can be difficult at times, but it's all dependant upon each players I.Q compared to that of the A.I.

Graphics - 8

Quarrel features simplistic cartoon graphics, and they work really well with how the game is set out. Each player is represented by different colours and characters. The ground will be the colours per player, whilst the characters are chosen randomly from a selection, such as pirates, Scotsmen, aliens etc. Each come with different colours to match their styles, such as green for the aliens, black for the ninjas. These little differences help add some difference in each players set so that they can be easily told apart from each other.

Despite the graphics being cartoony, they work really well. For example the landscape that you see whilst you play is bright and vibrant, and also highly detailed for graphics of this sort. Some of the maps feature small things to liven up the background, such as torches and lava, or sparkling water. As mentioned before, it's the simplistic feel of Quarrel which makes it work that much better.

Sound - 2

Coming up with sounds for a word game must be a hard task, and in this case, that task was failed. The main menu has a nice enough, although repetitive beat. However it's the sound of when the game is in play which is quite brutal. Firstly, you have a standard game show styled introduction. This is alright, but it's followed by the little characters appearing on screen. These come with loud and annoying sounds as if they were talking in some special language.

The characters also make these sounds whilst moving, and showing off the words that have been selected. It gets so aggravating quickly that I found myself having to mute the television just in order to play the game. After making a word, the losing team is bombed by the tiles of the other team, which is also a repetitive annoying sound. It's a shame that the sound lets the game down so drastically, as the rest of the content is solid for a word puzzle game.

It's a war of words to control the island

Achievements - 7

Quarrel features a decent list which fits into the genre very well. Creating a word worth 20 points for example will net you 15G, while finishing a round with an IQ of 200 will reward you with 30G. Some of these achievements will come purely from doing certain parts of the game, such as Domination. As the IQ of 200 example showed earlier though, some require skill, and in this case, knowledge of the best part of a dictionary.

Alongside needing skill, you also require some amount of luck. Some tasks that are expected of you include capturing Starfish Bay without losing a single Quarrel or claiming Calamari Cove from Dwayne, Caprice and Malik in a single turn. Ultimately, while the achievements may at first sound hard, you will be able to get the hang of how to achieve them, and with the right mixture of skill and luck, the 200G will be yours.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, Quarrel is a simple and effective twist on Scrabble, what the game does it does really well. Needing characters to be able to stand a chance in a match at first is odd to get used to, however once you are, it becomes a fun quirky game. The sound is the major let down, which is thankfully not needed. With a decent selection of achievements this is a decent XBLA title priced at 400MSP.

Mediterranean Traveller Map Pack Review

Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Genre: Action/Adventure
Players: One Multiplayer - 4-8
Price: 800MSP
Launch Date: 24th January 2012

Assassins Creed: Revelations was a big hit and brought to an end the trilogy of Ezio Auditore. A few months later saw the release of the Ancestors Multiplayer Character Pack, which added new achievements and characters to the multiplayer aspect of the game. Now we are graced with a map pack, which adds three new maps, as well as three which were featured on Brotherhood. The Map pack is titled Mediterranean Traveller Map Pack. So without further delay, read on to get our views on each of these maps.

Dyers - 8

Being one of the new maps, Dyers is quite a large map. It's a town which has many corners and chase breakers, providing a good layout for chases through the town. Due to the size of the map, Dyers would also be perfect for some team based objectives, such as Artifact Assault. The buildings aren't tall so it's easy to get onto the rooftops, but with big spaces between buildings that could become an easy kill.

A nice feature of this map is that it looks like one of the smaller districts found in the earlier games, coming complete with a stable. Dyers, like all the other maps, stay true to the series design. As previously mentioned, it's perfect for fans of close action and chases through towns. Fans of the rooftop chases however will struggle in this map. In the background players can see in detail, the walls surrounding the district. Off to one of the sides is a river, which whilst inaccessible, makes another nice extra feature.

Florence - 10

Florence, also known as Firenze, is a map from the Brotherhood multiplayer. It's a perfect map for single player objectives such as Manhunt and Corruption. This is due to the fact that you have the street level, which can lead to very long and entertaining chases. You also have the rooftops, which provide an elevated chasing ground.

This map might not be best suited to team objectives however, but there are other maps in this pack which are. For the fast paced action of the single player objectives, this is the best one to go on. The map has a market type area in the center, which makes for a risky place to hide in, as you can be caught from all angles, this however makes this map even better as nowhere is safe.

Imperial - 9

Imperial is another new map, which is another large map. The streets are long and wide, which means you could spot a target far off down the street instantly. There are rooftops and if you can stay on them, they provide some decent skirmishes. The best part of the map however is how easy it is to lose your target/hunters. There are lots of twists and turns and alleys. Some of the streets may be wide but there are many obstacles such as stalls.

This is a more built up dockside town, and the building work matches up to one of the richer districts of the game. As mentioned before, this map has plenty of twists, turns and alleys. This is actually a good map for those who set traps for their pursuers, as leading down a narrow alley can lead them straight into trip-wire bombs and other traps. This map would be good for both team and single objectives.

Finding more than a needle in a haystack in Jerusalem

Jerusalem - 7

Jerusalem is the other new map featured in this map pack. It also turned out to be the least favourable. The map is effectively a circle; the building in the center is not climbable. All around this building are market tents which provide some small cover. The chase breakers however end up being the least effective, as in some cases they close off a tent, which has holes in the ceiling anyway, and is also easy to climb as they are small. The worst chase breakers though are a pair opposite each other, on broken walls which have nothing on either side.

This fact however, makes most objectives even harder, as it's hard to lose the tracker once it's placed on you. This is a good fact, but the lack of buildings to climb takes away from the experience. Despite being the least favourable in this play-through, like the other maps, it's of a high quality. It's a fun small map to mess around with friends on, but for competitive play, the other maps provide more entertainment. Ultimately, parts of the map are too open, however the tents are handy to try to hide in.

An overview of Siena

San Donato - 8

San Donato is another map from Brotherhoods multiplayer. It's a good map for team based objectives. There are a lot of haystacks in this map, which makes for good hiding. Although it's a smaller map, it provides some good chases, especially with low rooftops which can add elevation into the mix during a chase.

With the amount of colours in this map, it provides warmth to the map, as well as makes it look different from the pack, almost peaceful, until the match begins. It is a fun map to run around on. The best part of this map however is the church. There is two ways in and out, the front door which is a chase breaker, and the hole in the back. Both ways will help greatly when losing your pursuers, especially if you enter through the hole, as you can swing from a bar down through the door, closing it behind you.

Siena - 8

Siena is the final map from Brotherhoods multiplayer. It's a carnival at night, and is also the smallest map in the pack. It's a very open area, but with a lot of theatres and seats providing obstacles, it becomes a fun map to run around in. The background of the map shows that this is in a central square, and there are horsemen running around as well, giving the background life.

While it's a fun map, it can be easy to lose targets, especially when they use traps, and this is a great part of the game. Siena definitely makes chasing and picking a target without the help of Templar Vision fun and also challenging.

Achievements - 9

The achievements that come tied to the Mediterranean Traveller Map Pack are easy to boost, and tricky to get legitimately. Coming in with a total of 6 achievements worth 150G, this map pack definitely offers something for everyone. Some of the achievements require you to do easy feats, such as leap of faiths in the Imperial map on Assassinate, or gaining 2 kills from a haystack during a session in San Donato.

Some require some luck and skill however, such as obtaining 2 variety bonuses during a session in Florence. One of the achievements is cumulative, which is being hidden for 3 minutes during a session of Wanted in Siena. All in all, these achievements can be as easy or as hard as you make them, and are fun to achieve.

Conclusion

Overall, this map pack is worth the 800MSP price tag. Yes, it includes 3 old maps, but they are just as much fun now as they were back on Brotherhood, and the new ones add more to the mix. While some maps may prove challenging due to the size and content, that is all part of playing Assassins Creed.
