Bioshock2 has been out for a solid week now, and I think I have a good grasp of the game and I'm ready to give a review to it. I'll start with single player, naturally.
I think everyone who plays games, pretty much knows that the first Bioshock was a big hit, and a great game. With that in mind, I didn't go in with high expectations, as to avoid disappointment. It seems like that was a good plan, because obviously, it couldn't compete to the first.
The game-play is much more smooth this time around, and plays out nicely on the killing aspect. A bit too nicely. You just don't die too much in this game.. Even on hard. It was insanely easy, I died just two or three times. In the first game, you had the Big Daddy to look forward to for a hard fight. In this one, they're not that tough, since you are one. You would assume the Big Sister would be a tough threat, especially considering they rarely show up. In order to fight a Big Sister, you must first deal with every Little Sister in the area, then one shows up. The Big Sisters, even the first one I fought, weren't anything I would consider strong. They're pretty basic to kill, and the same tricks over and over can work. Aside from that, it's pretty much just more of the same thing.
Yes, I am saying, that as a Big Daddy, the world of Rapture is just too easy to live in. There are no threats, and it's just a walk through. Hard was what I chose for my first playthrough, looking for a challenge. That's not to say the game wasn't fun, because it was pretty enjoyable, as I got to see more of my favorite city under the sea. Down where it's wetter, and better.
I felt as if the story was... Boring. As I said, I didn't have high expectations, in my eyes nothing they did could amount to the first game's twist. Still, nothing really happens, story wise in this game. It's just "OK, go find this person" followed by "OK, you got cut off and have to do this and this to advance." "Oh, don't forget Little Sisters so you can get stronger."
There wasn't any big twist this time around, and even once I got my main objective down, I was disappointed. There wasn't really an attachment in this game. The first one, you knew you had to listen to this man over a radio, if you wanted to survive. In this one, once you find out why you're doing what you're doing, it seems like they could have done better. It seemed pretty basic. If you've beaten the game, I think you'll know what I'm talking about. Once you find out why you need Elanor, it's kind of like "Really... That's it?" too many games follow this basic story.
Actually being able to go underwater was interesting, but kind of boring. Sure, you get to see the ocean up close and personal, but when you're swimming around (Or, rather, walking.) you're just going from point A to point B. Nothing special in that, and I was expecting something to happen in the sea at one point, but I was wrong on that.
There was also a lack of final boss fight. That's not necessarily bad, but it's something the first game had that this didn't. Maybe if I didn't play the first game days before this one came out, I would have liked it more, instead of constantly comparing the two.
Multiplayer, on the other hand, was great. It may have been tossed in just so the game had it, but I enjoyed it more than the single player for many reasons.
Although in single player, you could find one weapon and plasmid combo that works for you, and stick with it the whole game; you need to know how every plasmid and weapons works, and how they work together to stand a chance in tight situations. Not only that, but you also complete trials based on different plasmids, which gives you a sense of fulfillment and makes it seem as if you need to master everything.
An example of the above, is the nail gun. Nail gun takes time to rev up and start firing, so many people go around with it ready to fire. However, this makes a loud noise while it's getting ready, and you know they're coming. If you know they're coming, and you know that electro bolt interrupts the nail gun, making them take the entire time again to start firing. Because of this, you have the upper hand on them, constantly stopping them from firing until they switch weapons, or they die.
The game modes are all very different. You have Capture the Little Sister, which is sort of like Capture the Flag. Then, you have, Adam Grab. In Adam Grab, you must grab the little sister, and hold her for as long as possible. Whoever has the most time with her, wins. When you're holding the little sister, you can not use your gun, only your plasmids.
Aside form those modes, you also have the standard free-for-all, which is called "Survival of the Fittest". Civil War, which is a team death-match mode. Last Splicer Standing, which is described by many as Call of Duty's Search and Destroy mode with no bombs, meaning if you die you have to wait for the round to end to spawn again.
With all these modes, the multi-player part of the game pleases many players, and because of the plasmids, it adds new strategy to the typical FPS experience.
My scoring for this game, is a 7/10 for single player, and a 9/10 for multiplayer. I'm rating them separate, as they each offer different things. The game is definitely worth the buy, and single player is something to play, despite how easy it is, and it's rather pale story.
